Internal Linking Strategy

Internal linking is the primary mechanism for distributing link equity within a site. Every external backlink that lands on any page of the site creates a pool of equity that can be directed to money pages through intentional internal link architecture.

Why Internal Linking Matters for Link Building

External links are acquired slowly and expensively. Internal links are free and under full control. A site with 50 external backlinks and strong internal linking structure can outperform a site with 200 backlinks and poor internal structure, because the well-structured site delivers its equity to the right pages.

Silo Architecture

A silo groups related content under a parent page, with internal links flowing:

  • Top-down: parent links to child pages
  • Bottom-up: child pages link back to parent
  • Lateral: child pages link to sibling pages in the same silo
Homepage
├── Service Silo (Roofing)
│ ├── Roof Repair (service page)
│ ├── Roof Replacement (service page)
│ └── Emergency Roofing (service page)
├── Location Silo
│ ├── Miami Roofing (city page)
│ ├── Coral Gables Roofing (city page)
│ └── Hialeah Roofing (city page)
└── Blog (content hub)
├── Blog Post 1 → links to Roof Repair
├── Blog Post 2 → links to Miami Roofing
└── Blog Post 3 → links to both

Pillar-to-Spoke Structure

For content-heavy sites:

  • Pillar page — comprehensive overview of a broad topic (e.g., "Complete Guide to Roofing")
  • Spoke pages — detailed sub-topic articles (e.g., "How to Choose Roofing Materials")
  • Spokes always link back to the pillar
  • Pillar links to each spoke
  • External links should target the pillar page — this maximizes equity distribution to all spokes

Homepage Equity Distribution

The homepage typically receives the most external backlinks. Internal links from the homepage are the highest-value internal links on the site. Rules:

  • Limit homepage navigation to 7-10 primary links (more = diluted equity per link)
  • Homepage links should point to the highest-priority money pages only
  • Avoid linking to the blog index or category pages from homepage navigation unless they are money pages

Practical Rules

  1. Every money page must have at least 3 internal links pointing to it from other pages on the site
  2. The first internal link from a page passes the most equity — place the most important internal link early in the body
  3. Use descriptive anchor text for internal links — "roof repair in Miami" not "click here"
  4. Audit orphan pages — pages with zero internal links pointing to them receive zero internal equity
  5. Avoid over-linking — more than 100 links per page dilutes individual link value
  6. Link from high-traffic pages — blog posts and resources that receive traffic should link to service pages

Monthly Internal Link Audit

  • Crawl the site and identify pages receiving fewer than 3 internal links
  • Identify recently published blog posts that do not link to service pages
  • Check that all city pages link to the primary service page for that city
  • Verify that new service pages are linked from the homepage or top-level navigation within 30 days of publication

Integration with External Link Building

When acquiring external links, identify which page would benefit most from the link based on internal link architecture:

  • If a category page receives the external link and has strong internal links to service pages, the equity flows naturally
  • If the service page itself receives the external link and has weak internal outlinks, the equity concentrates but does not distribute

Target external links at pages that are both high-value (service/money pages) AND well-connected in the internal structure.
