Link Profile Audit SOP

Link Profile Health Check

| Metric | Healthy Range | Warning | |---|---|---| | Dofollow/Nofollow ratio | 60-80% dofollow | Below 50% or above 90% | | Anchor text diversity | No single anchor > 15% | Any anchor > 25% | | Link velocity | Steady growth | Sudden spikes or drops | | Referring domain diversity | Wide range of DAs | All from same DA range | | Geographic relevance | Local + national mix | All from foreign domains | | Topical relevance | In-niche + general | Irrelevant niches | | Toxic link ratio | Under 5% | Over 10% |

Toxic Link Indicators

Flag any link from:

  • Gambling, adult, or pharma sites
  • Known PBN patterns (same IP, same registrar, same template across multiple sites)
  • Non-indexed domains
  • Over-optimized anchor text (100% exact match)
  • Pure link directories (not legitimate business directories)
  • Foreign language sites with no relevance
  • Blog comments at scale (comment spam pattern)
  • Forum signatures at scale

Toxic Link Removal Process

  1. Document all suspicious links in a spreadsheet
  2. Attempt removal via outreach:
    • Email webmaster at support@domain.com or webmaster@domain.com
    • Use WhoIs contact info if site contact fails
    • Request specific URL removal with the exact anchor and link URL
  3. If removal fails after 2 attempts, add to Google Disavow file
  4. Submit disavow file in Search Console

Google Disavow File Format

# Disavow file for example.com
# Created: 2026-05-12
# Disavowing toxic links found in link audit

domain:spamsite1.com
domain:linkfarm2.net
https://specific-page.com/toxic-link-page

Use domain: prefix to disavow all links from a root domain. Use full URL only for single-page disavow.

404 Redirect Recovery (Reclaim Lost Link Equity)

Unresolved 404s bleed link equity. Recover them:

  1. Export all 404 URLs from Google Search Console (Coverage → Not Found)
  2. For each 404 URL, find the best matching live page:
    • Match by URL slug keywords
    • Match by topic/intent
    • Match by content hierarchy (product → product, blog → blog)
  3. Create 301 redirects from dead URLs to best live match
  4. If no good match exists: redirect to closest category or homepage as last resort
  5. Verify redirect chain length — never more than 2 hops

Output format for 301 redirect table:

| 404 URL | Recommended Live URL | Confidence | |---|---|---| | /old-service-page | /service/updated-page | High | | /dead-blog-post | /blog/related-post | Medium | | /removed-category | / (homepage) | Low — review manually |

Link Audit Schedule

| Frequency | Task | |---|---| | Monthly | Check new toxic links acquired | | Monthly | Review link velocity (new vs lost links) | | Monthly | Verify disavow file is current | | Quarterly | Full anchor text distribution audit | | Quarterly | Review referring domain diversity | | Post-penalty | Immediate full audit + disavow submission |

Tools

  • Ahrefs or Majestic: primary backlink data source
  • Google Search Console: index status, crawl errors, link data
  • DomDetailer: quick DA/TF check on referring domains
  • Google Search Console Disavow Tool: submit disavow file
